The Importance of a DAILY Routine

When people think about my activity, as trader, they assumes I'm traveling first class, eating fine cuisine every night, partying on nice sandy beaches and driving exotic cars...and “place a trade” once in a blue moon on my smart phone. How often do I hear them saying "Hey VTL, how many millions did you make today working from your iphone?" ..... Oh boy...

Reality is much different than fantasy. Successful traders are professionals, and live a life full of routine, discipline, preparation, meticulous planning and execution.

If you are serious about trading and want to be consistent on your winning ratio, and live a "decent" life, your should treat it as a business, not a hobby.

Here is my daily routine when I am trading and traveling. I trade Forex when traveling, its much easier for me to follow the currency market than trading stock when on the move.

7:00 Waking up to the "Slow Rise" ringtone of my iphone. My daily routine always starts with a 15-20 minutes meditation session. This allows me to restore my positive balance and release any negative energy. Try reaching tranquility in your trading day and see the difference it can make in your results.

7:30 Once I’ve finished my meditation session I do all the stretching my body needs. It's important, the body need to be relaxed, because all the muscles get very tense from adrenaline rush, and hours of sitting in front of my laptop. *This morning I had to see my therapist to help me release my neck pain, its not always easy when traveling, don't forget to enrolled in a fully covered medical insurance when abroad.*

8:00 I write down my daily objective. This is the thing I need to know before I start each day (according to my trading plan). If I hit the goal at the end of the day, I give myself a "A" on my scorecard, and all the way down to an "F" if I fail to follow my trading plan? Its important that you score your daily performance, what grade do you give yourself?

8:30 Now that I have my daily goal, I need to find some good trade setups from my playbook that will help me achieve my goal. Being a "Swing" trader, and trading on the Daily and 4H charts, there are days I don't have any A class setup to take, in which case I will work on my blog, my other businesses, or educate myself. Progress is a never ending process.

I try to narrow down to only 3 to 5 trades. I will review my entry, stop losses, trailing, scaling in and scaling out criteria. Once in the trade, I will review every 4 hours, or if I have time every hour (this doesn't happen often when I'm traveling).

Some of you might think my "work" is done by 9:00, and I spend the rest of my days going out, meeting friends, driving my fancy cars, shopping for cool gadgets and eating out in amazing palaces drinking champagne by the bottles with models. When all that might be true, when I was a fashion photographer...but as a trader, it's far from reality.

So when people ask me how is my day ...here's my reality. Instead of the Ferrari with exotic leather seats, I have a Herman Miller Aeron chair with mesh seat. Instead of fine gourmet dinners prepared by a French chef, I enjoy the yummy snacks from coffee shops and my “travel” is the walking between my hotel room and the co-working spaces. Does this sound "jetset" to you? I definitely enjoy my life and wouldn't give it away for any "corporate high salary" job in the world. Freedom is priceless.
